OMBUDSMAN PROGRAM

In 1990, GROW designed and obtained legislation for the Ombuds-Program. As parents of children with developmental disabilities, we have often worried about the quality of care they are receiving once they leave our homes and move into the community. For this reason, we developed a program in which we could have parents going into community housing. We train parents about what they should be observing and make placements with the help of Westchester County's Office for the Developmentally Disabled. Once in the placements, parents are another set of eyes to overlook the care and programming that our children are receiving. Volunteer parents are given placements near their homes. The parents are asked to make visits at least once a week, attend monthly meetings about any problems that they may have and write simple monthly reports. We continue to need all the volunteers that we can get.
